VP Green ’23 Live Stream

Final Pixel invites you to join us (live, in-person or online) at Breda University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands for a half-day Symposia on Friday, March 10th 2023 from 9:00-13:00 CET.

We will explore the state of sustainability in Virtual Production Practices within the Creative Industries.

This is a terrific opportunity to continue the conversation from the inaugural event held at the University of Greenwich in 2022, to take those findings from the co-design session and panel discussion and implement them into a dedicated research study.

According to a landmark 2020 BFI study, blockbuster films with budgets of over $70m (£53.5m) produce an average of 2,840 tonnes of CO2 per production, the new report reveals – a figure equivalent to the amount absorbed by 3,700 acres of forest in one year.

When the pandemic hit, the move to virtual production (VP) was swift and is now the fastest growing sector in the industry; growing as fast in 2020 as it had been predicted to grow across the entire decade. The global virtual production market size was valued at USD 1.60 billion in 2021 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.8% from 2022 to 2030, with many advertisers and studios committed to moving more than 70% of their production pipeline to VP over the next 2 years

Using LED technology, VP mitigates much of the environmental costs of traditional filmmaking by reducing transport and location fuel usage, but is it the panacea the industry hopes for? Or will the ecological costs of new soundstages and mass data-transfer wipe-out the potential gains? With over 300+ new LED Volumes (built within that last 2 years alone!) – now is the time to determine what the real costs of its environmental impact are, what sustainability solutions are available and can be implemented. Importantly, how best to tackle these large questions in a benchmark research study hopefully leading to findings that can be applied across the board.

This is a terrific opportunity to continue the conversation from the inaugural event held at the University of Greenwich in 2022, to take those findings from the co-design session and panel discussion and implement them into a dedicated research study.
